How it works

Divide the wall face area by one block's face. A standard CMU face is 16 in × 8 in (nominal).

Blocks = (Wall length × height in inches) ÷ (Block length × height in inches)

Example

A 10 ft long, 8 ft high wall with 16 × 8 in CMU needs 90 blocks — add ~10% for cuts.

Frequently asked questions

Is CMU the same as a cinder block?
Most buyers use the terms interchangeably; CMU is the modern concrete unit. The count is the same for a given block size.
