How it works

Divide the wall face area by the face area of one block. A standard CMU block face is 16 in × 8 in.

Blocks = (Wall length × height in inches) ÷ (Block length × height in inches)

Example

A 10 ft long, 8 ft high wall with standard 16 × 8 in blocks needs 90 blocks — add ~10% for cuts and breakage.

Frequently asked questions

Does this include mortar joints?
The standard 16×8 in figure already accounts for typical 3/8 in mortar joints. Add ~10% extra for cuts and breakage.
